The new M4OD is an updated/improved/version 2 of the Model III Overdrive with the signature Critter pre-amp design on the left side. It rips and roars, with loads of versatility! It’s a little British charm, with lots of Detroit muscle.
What was a M3OD: A Blues Breaker style overdrive running off a charge pump for that high-headroom sound (Critter is one of the few who has one of these), with a two-stage pre-amp after (also running off the charge pump for doubled voltage, more power). This made the M3OD compared to your traditional MG and BB circuits…an absolute beast.
Improvements over the M3OD: The design now has lots more useable bottom end. Every setting is useable, even if you max the tone and gain control! I have improved the internal gain control to work more optimally, and the sweep of the trim pot will land you in a more operational range. The new M4OD is capable of boosting, light overdrive all the way to thick crunchy tone that is mean!
The additional boost/pre-amp on the left side: I wanted to make a version 2 of the M3OD, what would make it better? Well besides bettering the circuit? ADD A BOOST! The combination between the two sides is very versatile. There is an internal gain control that will take you from a clean boost sound, to nicely driven. On the outside where I would traditionally put a toggle switch, is now a LEVEL control for the boost/pre-amp.
The position of the foot switch’s: I put them some what close together, but far enough apart so you do not have any mistakes happen. The circuits can be used independently or you can stomp both at the same time! You can also alternate which one you want on with one stomp! If you are going from completely off to completely on, you will be engaging the meanest Blues Breaker style pedal in the game! One foot can flip on SIX amplification stages opposed to the BB’s original two, or MG’s traditional three.
A note from Ronnie: I know this pedal is going to make an impact on pedal users. I have been stewing on the idea of a M3OD V2 for years now. The result, is glorious. I am immensely happy with the outcome, and I am extremely proud as a builder/circuit designer.
